Based at Tenterden, the K&ESR is now one of Britain’s premier steam railways. Staffed by a largely volunteer workforce, traditional values still hold good. The guard waves his flag, and a smartly uniformed ticket inspector clips tickets as the train ambles unhurriedly through 10.5 miles of countryside – most of which is inaccessible by car.
The ride to Bodiam takes about fifty minutes, the peace disturbed only by the gentle beat of the steam locomotive.
